Max Dowman chuckled as Declan Rice playfully nudged the ball against him during an open training session on Arsenal’s pre-season tour in Hong Kong this summer.
The 15-year-old attempted to replicate the lighthearted skill, only for manager Mikel Arteta to cheekily swat the ball away, halting Dowman’s move in a moment of pure fun.
It was a vivid reminder that, despite the remarkable flair he’s displayed in Arsenal’s first-team pre-season outings and now in his Premier League debut - Dowman was a Year 10 student until just last month.

That jovial training moment came a day before he stepped in for Arsenal’s star Bukayo Saka against Tottenham Hotspur at Kai Tak Stadium. The teenager entered the pitch and instantly became Arsenal’s most dynamic attacking force.
Dowman’s substitute appearances were among the standout moments of Arsenal’s pre-season, as he dazzled with electrifying runs down the right flank, earning two penalties against Newcastle United and Villarreal.

At just 15 years and 234 days, he’s now the second-youngest player to feature for Arsenal, trailing only teammate Ethan Nwaneri, who debuted at 15 years and 181 days against Brentford in September 2022.
Coming off the bench in the 64th minute, Dowman thrilled the home crowd with a weaving run, halted only by a foul from Leeds left-back Gabriel Gudmundsson, who received a yellow card.
In stoppage time, Dowman showcased his nimble footwork again, drawing a foul from Anton Stach in the penalty area, with Viktor Gyokeres converting the resulting spot-kick to seal a 5-0 demolition of Leeds.

'Dowman can deliver things I've never seen in my life'

“This is what we witness daily in training,” Arsenal manager Arteta told BBC Sport when asked about Dowman’s impact.
“We’ve observed how he navigates various situations training, being part of the squad, and even handling disappointment when not selected in Manchester [against United], yet staying ready to come off the bench.
“Huge credit to his family. They’ve nurtured a young man with extraordinary maturity, composure, and ambition qualities rare to find.
“And to the academy - Per [Mertesacker] and all the coaches who’ve guided him on this path.
“Here’s a boy with no hesitation, utterly convinced at 15 that he can step up and perform, something I’ve never seen in my career.
“He brings joy, emotion, and something unique that makes our work so rewarding.”

Dowman’s prodigious talent is no surprise to those within Arsenal’s ranks. He’s been training with the senior squad since age 14.
He joined the team’s warm-weather training camp in Dubai in January, and fans clamored for his inclusion last season when injuries ravaged Arteta’s squad.
Dowman represented England at the European Under-17 Championship in May, becoming the tournament’s youngest scorer with a goal in a victory over the Czech Republic.
Playing three years above his age group for Arsenal’s Under-18s, he notched 19 goals and five assists in 23 matches last season, with 17 of those contributions (14 goals, three assists) coming in the final seven games of the Under-18 Premier League South campaign.

Age restrictions prevented a Premier League debut last season, but now eligible, and with a possible hamstring injury to Saka, the young winger may soon find himself in the spotlight more frequently.
Dowman stepped in for Saka in four pre-season matches before being rested against Athletic Bilbao, yet he appears brimming with vitality for what could be his breakout season.
Arteta emphasized the need to “protect” Dowman on his journey, but that hasn’t stopped teammates from showering him with praise.
“His potential is clear to everyone. Competing against grown men, he’s a delight to watch for the fans, too,” said Jurrien Timber post-match.
With injuries sidelining Arsenal’s trio of Kai Havertz, Martin Odegaard, and Saka, more Premier League opportunities may soon come Dowman’s way.
